Signs of the Day of Judgment
Everything in this world eventually comes to an end. Similarly, the heavens and the earth also have a fixed lifespan. Once their time is completed, they will perish, and this is what we call Qiyamah (يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ – the Day of Judgment). The Quran mentions several names for Qiyamah, such as يَوْمُ الْبَعْثِ (Yawm al-Ba’ath – The Day of Resurrection), يَوْمُ الْحَسْرَةِ (Yawm al-Hasrah – The Day of Regret), and الْقَارِعَةُ (Al-Qari’ah – The Striking Calamity).
Many people often ask, “When will يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ occur?” This same question was asked of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). As mentioned in a hadith, a man once inquired, “What is the exact time of يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ?” The Prophet (ﷺ) responded, “What have you prepared for that day?”
From this hadith, we learn that instead of focusing on knowing the exact time of يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ, the real concern should be preparing for it. Muslims should constantly strive to improve themselves so that they can be saved from the hardships of that day.
However, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) did describe various signs of يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ. As mentioned in the Hadith of Jibreel (عليه السلام), when Jibreel (عليه السلام) asked about يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ, the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned its signs:
- A slave girl will give birth to her master (meaning that children will behave like masters towards their mothers, treating them like servants).
- Barefoot, naked shepherds will compete in constructing tall buildings (meaning that those who were once poor and had nothing to eat will suddenly become wealthy through unlawful means and boast about their high status).
Similarly, many other minor and major signs of يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ have been mentioned in various ahadith, indicating the approach of the Final Hour.
Major Signs of the Day of Judgment
The minor signs are called “Alamat-e-Sughra” (علامات صغریٰ), while the major signs are known as “Alamat-e-Kubra” (علامات کبریٰ). The major signs will appear one after another in quick succession, just like pearls falling from a broken string.
Regarding the major signs of يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ (Yawm al-Qiyamah – The Day of Judgment), a hadith states:
Muslim narrated that Hudhayfah ibn Asid al-Ghifari (رضي الله عنه) said:
The Prophet (ﷺ) came out to us while we were discussing something. He asked,
“What are you discussing?”
The companions replied, “We are talking about the Hour.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) then said, “It will not come until you see ten signs before it.”
He then mentioned:
- The Emergence of mehdi
- The Dajjal (Antichrist)
- The descent of ‘Isa ibn Maryam (عليه السلام)
- The emergence of Yajuj and Majuj (Gog and Magog)
- A landslide in the East
- A landslide in the West
- A landslide in the Arabian Peninsula
- The Beast (Dabbatul-Ard)
- The Smoke (Dukhan)
- The rising of the sun from the west
- A fire that will emerge from Yemen and drive people to their place of gathering
Now, let us explain these signs in more detail.
1.THE EMERGENCE OF MEHDI
The arrival of Imam Mahdi is also one of the major signs of Qiyamah. His name will be Muhammad, and he will appear at the age of 40. He will be performing Tawaf in the Haramain Tayyibain when the Abdal will recognize him and pledge allegiance to him. After that, Dajjal will emerge.
2.Dajjal
is a member of the Jewish people, and most of his followers will be Jews. He will have only one eye and his eyebrow will be completely missing. His forehead will have the Arabic letters “ک-ف-ر” (meaning disbeliever) written on it. According to a Sahih Muslim hadith, his emergence will be from the east, and according to one opinion, he will emerge from the fields of Sham and Iraq. For 40 days, he will roam the earth, except for Makkah and Madinah. He will have a bag with him, which he will call Paradise, and a fire, which he will call Hell. He will claim to be God. Whoever believes in him will be admitted into his Paradise, which will actually be fire, and whoever does not believe in him will be thrown into the fire, which will actually be Paradise. He will command the clouds, and they will bring rain, and the vegetation will grow, but this will all be deception. Therefore, as soon as the Dajjal leaves, everything will turn into ruins.
3 Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) will descend from the heavens
During this time, Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) will descend from the heavens in the Umayyad Masjid of Damascus, supported by the wings of angels. He will instruct Imam Mahdi to lead the prayer, and Imam Mahdi will do so. There will be a battle between the Muslims and Dajjal. When Dajjal sees Isa (peace be upon him), he will begin to melt from his breath. Isa (peace be upon him) will chase him until, near Bait-ul-Maqdas at the place of Lud, he will strike Dajjal with a spear on his back, and he will be killed. He will rule the earth for 40 years, justice will prevail to the extent that even a goat’s kid will play with a lion.
In hadith
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I swear by Allah, that Jesus, son of Mary will indeed descend judging (mankind) with justice.”
4.The emergence of Yajuj and Majuj (Gog and Magog)
Yajuj and Majuj are a nation that is currently confined, as mentioned in the Hadith. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Today, a hole has been opened in the barrier of Gog and Magog this much,” and he made a circle with his index finger and thumb.
As the Day of Judgment approaches, when they break free, they will consume everything in their path, to the extent that even the water of entire seas will be depleted. Then, Prophet ‘Isa (عليه السلام) will supplicate to Allah, and they will be destroyed.
5.6.7.A landslide in the East ,West and in the Arabian Peninsula
The occurrence of three major earthquakes is among the great signs of the Day of Judgment. The earthquake in the East could take place in the Asian region, while the one in the West could occur in Europe or America. Additionally, an earthquake will strike the Arabian Peninsula, shaking the people to their core. The purpose of these earthquakes is for Muslims to take lessons from them, engage in righteous deeds, and strengthen their faith.
8.The Beast (Dabbatul-Ard)
Dabbat-ul-Ard is a creature that will emerge as one of the major signs of the Day of Judgment. It will have the ring of Sulayman (AS) in its hand and will mark the foreheads of believers and disbelievers to distinguish them.
This event is mentioned in the Holy Quran, where Allah says:
وَإِذَا وَقَعَ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَخْرَجْنَا لَهُمْ دَآبَّةًۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ تُكَلِّمُهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا لَا يُوقِنُونَ
“And when the Word befalls them, We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth, speaking to them, [saying] that the people were, of Our signs, not certain in faith.” [Surah An-Naml: 82]
9.The Smoke (Dukhan)
One of the major signs of the Day of Judgment is the appearance of Dukhan (Smoke), which will cover the entire earth. This is mentioned in the Holy Quran, where Allah says:
فَٱرْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِى ٱلسَّمَآءُ بِدُخَانٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ
“Then wait for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke.” [Surah Ad-Dukhan: 10]
According to Islamic teachings, this thick smoke will remain for forty days and nights, causing severe distress to disbelievers, while for believers, it will feel like a mild cold. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also mentioned Dukhan as one of the ten major signs of the Last Hour.
This event will serve as a warning for humanity, urging people to repent and turn back to Allah before the final judgment arrives.
10.The rising of the sun from the west
One of the major signs of the Day of Judgment is the rising of the sun from the west. This event will mark the nearing of the world’s end and the final moments before the Day of Judgme
Hadith on This Sign
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“The Hour will not be established until the sun rises from the west. When it rises from the west and people see it, they will all believe, but that will be the time when faith will not benefit anyone who did not believe before or did not earn any good through their faith.” (Bukhari & Musli
When the sun rises from the west, the doors of repentance and faith will be permanently closed. No new faith or repentance will be accepted after this point. Those who remained disbelievers before this event will suffer great lo
Allah Almighty says:
“On the Day when some of the signs of your Lord will come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before or had not earned any good through its faith.” (Surah Al-An’am: 158)
This event will indicate a massive cosmic shift, and after this, the other major signs of the Day of Judgment will unfold rapidly.
11.A fire that will emerge from Yemen and drive people to their place of gathering
One of the major signs of the Day of Judgment is a great fire that will emerge from Yemen and drive people toward their place of gathering. This fire will originate from Yemen and spread across the East and the West. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“The Hour will not be established until a fire emerges from Yemen that will gather the people and drive them to their place of assembly.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

The Quran states:
“And We shall set up the scales of justice on the Day of Judgment, so that no soul will be wronged in the least.” (Al-Anbiya: 47)

Then, when Allah wills, He will bring Israfil (AS) back to life and command him to blow the trumpet again. At that moment, all the dead will be resurrected from their graves and will stand before their Lord for judgment. Every soul will be held accountable for its deeds.
May Allah grant us the ability to prepare for the Hereafter before our death. Ameen.
